Recruiting: Prospects with scholarship offers are getting younger and younger

Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin is well known for offering football scholarships to underage prospects.

As an assistant coach in USC in 2010, he extended an offer to 13 year old quarterback David Sills, who committed to the Trojans. Sills eventually went the JUCO route before finally ending up at West Virginia where the 6-foot-4, 210 pounder may see time at wide receiver.

Recently, Kiffin offered a pair of young signal callers. I do mean young. sixth grader Pierce Clarkson and seventh grade Kaden Martin, son of Tee Martin.

Hawai’i head coach Nick Rolovich topped all of that with an offer this past weekend to an 11 year old quartrback who won’t be eligible until the 2024 signing class. Titan Lacaden, a native of the islands, attended a camp at Hawai’i this past weekend along with his dad and teammates. It was at that time that the offer was extended to the soon-to-be sixth grader.

Titan’s dad Jack coached Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota as a youth. Titan’s older brother Jake is a linebacker at Nevada. The family is familiar with 2017 Alabama signee and Hawai’i native Tua Tagovailoa.

I can’t give much of an early scouting report on young Titan except that he seems to love cartoons. I don’t think that he has a Twitter account or suck his thumb. Can’t say that about all quarterbacks, I suppose.

Meanwhile, Houston head coach Major Applewhite has gotten some additional experience for the ’17 squad via the transfer route.

Ex-Arizona State wide receiver Ellis Jefferson (6-5, 212) is a grad transfer and immediately eligible at UH. He snared 25 passes for 325 yards and two scores during his Sun Devils career.

Two more grad transfers who can immediately contribute to the Cougars in 2017 are former Auburn offensive lineman Deon Mix (6-3, 301) and Texas A&M nose tackle Reggie Chavis (6-1, 290).

Mix was the No. 5 rated prospect in Mississippi his senior prep season. Chavis was pursued out of high school by LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, West Virginia and Missouri before deciding on the Aggies. Back then, Chavis was a lineman but he grew into a defensive lineman.

Another transfer, ex-Miami defensive tackle Courtel Jenkins, will have to sit out 2017 before becoming eligible for Houston in 2018.
